What's Your Progress?

How is your summer reading going?  Have you mailed your postcard to your teacher?  If you haven't done it yet, try to get it done pretty soon.  How about reading?  Are you keeping a journal of what you're reading?  Are you using this blog to post your entries or are you writing down your thoughts and ideas on paper?  Please get going boys and girls!!! School is just one month away.

The Mighty Miss Malone

Great book!!!! I could not put it down after I reached the halfway point.  Deza is a young girl living during the Great Depression.  Life is tough for her family and it only gets tougher.  I really got a feel for what it must have felt like to have lived during the 1930's.  Fifth graders- if you haven't read an RICBA 2015 nominee yet, try this book.  I think you'll get attached to Deza and her brother Jimmy.

The 14 Fibs of Gregory K

Greg Pincus wrote the The 14 Fibs of Gregory K., one of the RICBA 2015 nominees.  Everyone in Gregory's family loves math- except for Gregory!!  He gets himself into a bit of trouble when he signs up for the citywide math competition to make his family happy.  Read about Gregory's adventures, as he tries to find a way to understand mathematics, when all he wants to do is to become a writer!

Summer reading~

What a great summer to spend some time reading! I have read a few books so far, some children's novels and some novels adult novels. I am currently reading a book that took place where I grew up in Vermont. I love it when the stories live in you throughout your day, even when you put the book down.

I just finished a book, Wild Wings, by Gill Lewis. This book takes place in the beautiful countryside of Scotland. It is about a friendship that develops between the main character Callum and a new girl in town, Isis. She is mysterious character and an avid naturalist at heart. Together they find an Osprey nest and track a family of Osprey from Scotland to Africa. This book reminded me of A Bridge to Terrabithia when I read it. If you like a book about the wonders of the natural world, you will love this book. Both my boys enjoyed it. It is well written and has a mystifying, fanciful tone. A great summer read!

I just read Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library- one of the RICBA nominees for 2015.  I noticed that Zack C. also read it.  I agree with his thoughts about turning the book into a movie.
"The book “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library” would make a good movie because it has all the things to make a blockbuster movie. One of the things the book has is competition and who doesn't like a movie with competition. It also has moments that make you think about what is going to happen next and a good movie always makes you think that. Lastly, it has games that have real history questions so that means the movie would be educational at some parts. If I were to make a movie out of this book I would have lots of fun."

Try this book this summer. If you liked Willie Wonka, you'll love Mr. Lemoncello!

Happy July!!

I hope everyone is enjoying summer vacation!  We didn't have great weather for the Fourth of July but this weekend is turning out great.  I hope you're finding time to read.  I just finished Gaby,Lost and Found by Angela Cervantes.  If you are an animal lover, you'll love this book. Gaby starts volunteering at an animal shelter and uses her creative writing style to create flyers that help the dogs and cats find new homes.  Gaby is doing a great job finding home for pets, but she needs to figure out her own home situation.  Her mom has been deported to Honduras and she doesn't really have a hone anymore.  Read about Gaby if you get a chance this summer.
